“Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve.… But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:14-15)
I’ve always resonated with the story of Joshua taking God’s people into the Promised
Land—a task that Moses was not able to complete. Using Joshua in mighty ways, God performed miracles that only He could do. In those miracles, I see the faithfulness of God even in the midst of Israel’s unfaithfulness.
At the end of his life, Joshua urged the people to serve the Lord alone and to put away false gods. He made it clear that he and his house chose to serve the Lord. At first glance, it seems astonishing

that the Israelites, who witnessed firsthand many miracles—the crossing of the flooded Jordan, the fall of Jericho, and the sun standing still (to name a few)—still did not believe and turned completely away from God.
Before being overly critical of the Israelites, though, we must ask ourselves if we are any different today. Considering what God has done in and for our nation, where is our focus? More specifically, whom do we serve and what choices do we make? Far beyond any choices we make in the coming election, our choices surrounding
