Susan Sharp, UMC’s Vice President of Philanthropy, shares that since much of their ministry is specifically related to healthcare, they operate in a constantly changing landscape. “As we all know,” she continues, “Boomers are aging in such numbers that we have to be fluid and nimble to keep up! Lifestyle, housing, dining, and healthcare are all important in the golden years, so our organization must adjust and prepare to serve a new generation’s needs and preferences.”

healthcare service line which will provide assistance to seniors in various locations throughout New Jersey. Another significant priority is to become cutting-edge providers of memory care services to seniors and their families.

Susan shares that her favorite thing about being in leadership at UMC is “working directly with our residents. Hearing their stories as we build a culture of philanthropy is very gratifying.” Unlike ‘for-profit’ senior care facilities, UMC is driven by principles of faith.

UMC’s leadership is committed to fostering spirituality, evidenced in their unique mission and the pastoral

care that is part of their communities. One story that had an impact on Susan was hearing about a widow who had been aided by the generosity of UMC’s donors.

“After Louise’s husband passed away,” Susan recalls, “she was concerned about having enough savings for the rest of her retirement. She moved to a UMC community, but after a number of years was unable to afford the total cost of her care. Fortunately, thanks to our donors, we were able to offer her the gift of benevolent care. Louise was able to remain in the community she loves! She told me she is grateful to God and her neighbors for the care and peace of mind she has been given.”
