It’s What’s I I
AMERICA ’S COSTL Y , CR Robert E.
Kauffman CFP®, CAP®,
President
n the Kauffman house, tacos are a family specialty. When we all get together, everyone works together on the chopping, the cheese grating, the ground beef spicing, and the table setting. But when it comes to eating, we all have our own way of piling in the goodness: some like sour cream, and some like hot sauce. My wife adds green peppers; I add extra onions. In the end, the taco shells are packed to their breaking point.
You’ve probably heard the phrase, “America’s infrastructure is crumbling,” in the news. Maybe the word ‘crumbling’ brings to
mind a taco shelled filled to the top and then squeezed too hard by an over-eager child. Whatever imagery you prefer, the crumbling is a concerning problem. What does an ‘aging infrastructure’ really mean, and what can we do about it?
THE NEW/OLD PLAN In the 1930s, following the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt put a largely unemployed America ‘back to work’ with the New Deal, a series of federal programs and public works projects. Rebuilding infrastructure included building roads, bridges, and even the Hoover Dam. Since our more recent economic downturn in 2008, unemployment has continued to be a problem. President Trump suggests following in FDR’s footsteps. He’s suggesting that, for example, American airports should be updated to standards existing in China and Dubai (both of which are more modern in design and technology than their American counterparts), that America should embrace high speed trains, that our bridges need structural upgrades, and that our road system needs to be expanded to meet the needs of today’s population.
